Uttar Pradesh Government Prohibits Halal Labelling on Edible Products
In a recent move, the Uttar Pradesh government has implemented a ban on the labelling of halal on various consumables, including dairy products, sugar, bakery items, peppermint oil, savouries, and edible oil. This decision, communicated through an official order from the State Food Commissioner’s office in Lucknow, aims to uphold the standards set by a legislation passed in 2006 concerning the quality of edible products.
Confusion Concerns Lead to Ban: State Food Commissioner’s Rationale
Commissioner Anita Singh, in the issued order, articulated that the practice of halal labelling introduces confusion among consumers, contradicting the principles outlined in the State government’s law on the quality of edible products. According to Singh, this confusion is not only undesirable but also constitutes a violation of the legislation. The order explicitly states that creating confusion among consumers is a punishable offence under the law.
Legal Consequences: Ban on Production, Stocking, and Distribution
The order doesn’t merely serve as a directive but also carries legal weight. Citing specific sections of the law, the senior official has prohibited the production, stocking, and distribution of all halal-branded edible items within the state borders. This move emphasizes the government’s commitment to maintaining clarity in food labelling and ensuring that consumers are well-informed about the products they purchase.
