Iran Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf Calls for 10% Cut in Gas Consumption Ahead of Winter

Iran Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf Calls for 10% Cut in Gas Consumption Ahead of Winter

TEHRAN, October 25, 2026 [VoM News]: Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has called for a nationwide campaign to reduce natural gas consumption by at least 10 per cent ahead of winter, warning of potential shortages as temperatures begin to fall.

In a video carried by Iranian media, Ghalibaf said a collective effort would be necessary to manage gas supplies during the approaching winter months.

“To get through the approaching winter, a nationwide effort is essential … to reduce gas consumption by at least 10 percent,” he said.

Ghalibaf also announced a financial incentive for households and other consumers who save gas, saying they would receive payments corresponding to their reductions directly into their bank accounts.

“Anyone who saves gas, regardless of the amount, will immediately receive the corresponding proceeds in their bank account,” he said, adding that the scheme would allow people to see the impact of their savings on household budgets.

Iran possesses significant natural gas reserves and is a major producer, but has repeatedly faced domestic shortages, particularly during periods of high winter demand when heating requirements increase.

The situation has been compounded by the US-Israeli war that began in February. Tehran has said that strikes during the nearly 40-day period of intense fighting targeted key infrastructure, including natural gas refineries.

Winter temperatures in parts of northern Iran frequently fall below freezing, increasing pressure on the country’s gas supply network as demand rises.
