Iran Halts LPG Supplies to Pakistan Amid Border Closure, Cooking Gas Prices Surge 56%

ISLAMABAD, October 24, 2026 [VoM News]: Pakistan is facing a sharp squeeze in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies after Iran halted exports following Islamabad’s closure of its border with Iran, reportedly under pressure from the United States.

According to Reuters, Pakistan had been importing around 7,000 tonnes of LPG daily from Iran, accounting for more than half of its supply. The disruption has pushed up cooking gas prices, with a 12-kg cylinder reportedly rising from 4,500 Pakistani rupees to 7,000 rupees within days, an increase of about 56%.

Hundreds of LPG tankers are stranded at the Gabd-Rimdan and Taftan border crossings, disrupting deliveries to Pakistani markets. The Quetta Chamber of Commerce has reportedly advised its members to stop placing fresh orders with Iranian suppliers.

An Iranian parliamentarian criticised Islamabad’s decision, saying Tehran had not expected Pakistan to come under American pressure.

The disruption comes amid wider US efforts to restrict Iran’s land-based trade routes. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said Washington is working with Pakistan and Turkey to cut off such routes.

The suspension threatens to deepen Pakistan’s household fuel difficulties, with prices expected to rise further if alternative supplies fail to make up the shortfall.

The situation also highlights the economic consequences of tightening restrictions on Iran’s cross-border trade, particularly for neighbouring countries dependent on its energy supplies.
