India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement Takes Effect, Indian Exports Get Zero-Duty Access

India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement Takes Effect, Indian Exports Get Zero-Duty Access

NEW DELHI, October 20, 2026 [VoM News]: The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) came into force on Tuesday, providing zero-duty access to the New Zealand market for 100 per cent of Indian exports from the first day.

The agreement is expected to improve the price competitiveness of Indian products and create new opportunities for exporters in sectors including engineering, textiles, apparel, leather, footwear, pharmaceuticals, gems and jewellery and processed foods.

Several Indian products previously attracted import duties of up to 10 per cent in New Zealand. Their removal could help Indian manufacturers compete more effectively and diversify into new overseas markets.

Engineering and industrial goods are expected to be among the sectors benefiting from improved market access. Small businesses and exporters could also gain, although higher sales will depend on factors including demand, product quality, compliance with standards and distribution networks.

India and New Zealand signed the agreement on April 27, 2026, as part of efforts to deepen bilateral economic relations.

The two countries have set a target of doubling bilateral trade to $7 billion by 2030. The agreement also contains provisions covering investment and mobility.

New Zealand will receive preferential access to India for several products, including sheep meat, wool and forestry goods, while certain agricultural imports will remain subject to specified quotas and conditions.
