48-Hour Manipur Shutdown Disrupts Normal Life After Killing of Three Meitei Civilians

IMPHAL, October 20, 2026 [VoM News]: Normal life was disrupted across Manipur on Tuesday as a 48-hour statewide general strike called over the killing of three Meitei firewood collectors brought vehicular movement to a near halt in several areas.

The Native People Committee Manipur (NPC) called the shutdown following the October 18 attack near Uyumpok and Nongshum in Imphal East district.

The victims were identified as Lairenpakpam Inaobi Meitei, 40, Aribam Noni Meitei, 35, and Ksh. Sushil Singh, 30. Several others were reportedly injured.

Shutdown supporters were seen at Canchipur, Khurai and Patsoi, while protests were also reported from Lamlong, Singjamei, Kwakeithel and Chingmeirong.

The NPC has demanded a time-bound investigation into the killings, additional security deployment in vulnerable areas and removal of allegedly unauthorised armed camps near the Khongbal Tangkhul foothills and Khamenlok.

It has also sought a decision on the Suspension of Operations agreement and raised other political and security-related demands. The allegations remain those of the committee.

Meanwhile, individuals detained after two victims’ bodies were brought to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s residence were released on Monday.

Health services, religious activities and other essential services have been exempted from the shutdown, with organisers appealing for emergency movement to remain unobstructed.
