Houthis Release 159 Yemen Government-Aligned Detainees Under Amnesty, International Committee of the Red Cross Supports Return

Houthis Release 159 Yemen Government-Aligned Detainees Under Amnesty, ICRC Supports Return

SANAA, October 18, 2026 & [VoM News]: A major sigh of relief has been announced by the Yemen’s Houthis related to the release of detainees in connection with the ongoing conflict.

The Houthis have released 159 people related to the ongoing conflict, with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) supporting their return home.

The ICRC issued a statement while taking to microblogging platform ‘X’ where it stated the detainees were unilaterally released by authorities in Sanaa.

Before their departure, its delegates interviewed each detainee and informed their families about the planned release.

On the other side, ICRC medical teams also assessed the detainees’ health and fitness for road travel and arranged additional travel assistance where required.

The Houthis described the released detainees as fighters aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognised government.

They claimed the men had surrendered without fighting when Houthi forces captured strategic positions along the Red Sea last month.

Meanwhile, the Houthi official Abdelqader al-Murtada said the latest release was carried out under an amnesty, adding that 323 prisoners had so far been freed under the initiative.

The ICRC further clarified that the release was initiated by the National Committee for Prisoners Affairs and was not conducted under the Stockholm Agreement.

It also stressed that it had no role in deciding who would be released or determining the number of detainees.

The humanitarian organisation said it remained available as a neutral intermediary to support future releases, transfers and repatriations of conflict-related detainees in Yemen.
