Oil Prices Edge Lower as Investors Weigh Middle East Tensions, Possible US Sanctions Relief
SINGAPORE, October 16, 2026 [VoM News]: Oil prices edged lower in early trading on Friday as investors weighed escalating tensions in the Middle East against potential US measures aimed at reducing shipping costs and easing pressure on global energy markets.
Brent crude futures fell 41 cents, or 0.39 percent, to $105.51 a barrel as of 00:12 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude declined 54 cents, or 0.55 percent, to $97.43 a barrel.
The decline followed a decision by the International Energy Agency to release more than 20 million barrels of diesel along with remaining oil from emergency reserves pledged in March to address supply pressures.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration is considering lifting sanctions on some vessels associated with the so-called shadow fleet, Reuters reported, citing a US official.
The vessels have transported oil from countries including Russia, Iran and Venezuela. Any relaxation of restrictions could help reduce shipping costs that have risen sharply amid disruptions to international energy trade.
However, geopolitical risks continue to support concerns over supplies.
Renewed attacks on vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments, and escalating fighting between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthis have heightened uncertainty over energy flows from the Middle East.
