BREAKING: India Plans To Buy US-Made Javelin Anti-Tank Missile System: US Envoy Sergio Gor
New Delhi: India is looking to procure the US-made Javelin anti-tank missile system to deepen defence cooperation between New Delhi and Washington, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said on Thursday.
He told reporters, “India is planning to purchase, well, let’s see the scope, but the prospect is there, for these kind of battle-tested weapons, they (India) plan to purchase” the portable and lethal missile.
He also suggested that New Delhi’s purchase of Javelin weapons could also lead to the possibility of joint production.
India’s proposal to buy Javelin systems was approved by the US State Department back in November 2025.
This shoulder-fired and portable guided missile uses fire-and-forget technology and is designed to destroy tanks and other armoured vehicles. Once it locks on to its target, the weapon pursues the vehicle itself, freeing the operator to seek cover.
The U.S. Army and forces from several allied countries possess these weapons.
Additionally, it offers a capability to attack tanks from above, hitting areas not typically covered by armour protection.
The specifics of how many Javelin systems India plans to purchase and its price have not been announced. Indian government officials have not yet offered any official comments on the statement made by the US envoy.
These two countries, India and USA have progressively enhanced their strategic as well as defence ties and the latter had bought Apache and Chinook helicopters, C-17 and C-130J aircraft, P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, and M777 howitzers from the US so far.
