BREAKING: Bangladesh Eyes Saudi-Pakistan-Turkey Pact

DHAKA, AUGUST 28 [VoM News]: Discussions have emerged over Dhaka’s potential accession to the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement during talks between Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud in Jeddah on Tuesday.

Both ministers held a meeting on the margins of the 23rd OIC Extraordinary Council of Foreign Ministers in Jeddah. As per the statement issued by the Bangladesh foreign ministry, the two leaders exchanged views on increasing the existing partnership, and discussed bilateral relations, economic and investment matters and contribution of Bangladeshi workers in the kingdom.

An official of Bangladesh’s foreign ministry told news agency Reuters that they have received the invitation from Saudi Arabia for accession but declined to provide specifics like when the same was received and how.

The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, signed on Aug. 7 by Saudi Arabia, Trkiye and Pakistan under which any armed attack against one will be treated as an attack against all three as clearly defined by the Pakistani Foreign Ministry, could raise eyebrows in New Delhi due to the involvement of Pakistan and closer defence ties that Trkiye enjoys with Islamabad.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman, in this context said accession into the accord is a “sovereign decision of the country and depends on the national interest,”. Bangladesh’s government, meanwhile, is attempting to broaden its associations with, among others, Turkey and Saudi Arabia while balancing its growing alliances in the region.
