WhatsApp Bans Over 71 Lakh Accounts in India in September

In a significant move towards maintaining user safety and complying with the new IT Rules 2021, Meta-owned WhatsApp has reported banning a staggering 71 lakh problematic accounts in India during the month of September. Out of this massive number, approximately 25.71 lakh accounts were proactively banned, even before users reported any issues, according to WhatsApp’s monthly compliance report.

    Rising Complaints and Prompt Action

WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging platforms in India with over 500 million users, received an astonishing 10,442 complaint reports in September. It’s noteworthy that 85 of these reports resulted in actions taken by WhatsApp, demonstrating the company’s commitment to addressing user concerns promptly.

    Strengthening User Safety and Compliance

The term “Accounts Actioned” indicates instances where WhatsApp took remedial action based on the report, which can include either banning an account or reinstating a previously banned account. This user-safety report not only includes details of user complaints and corresponding actions but also outlines WhatsApp’s proactive measures to combat abuse on its platform.

Collaboration with the Grievance Appellate Committee

Furthermore, WhatsApp revealed that it received six orders from the newly-formed Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) in India during September and promptly complied with them. The GAC was recently launched by the Indian government to empower social media users by addressing their concerns regarding content and other issues. This move aims to strengthen the country’s digital laws and enhance oversight of major tech companies.

    WhatsApp’s Commitment to Combatting Abuse

WhatsApp emphasized its commitment to being an industry leader among end-to-end encrypted messaging services in preventing and combating abuse. The company employs a team of professionals, including engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, and experts in law enforcement, online safety, and technology developments to oversee and enhance these efforts.

The actions taken by WhatsApp reflect the platform’s dedication to ensuring user safety and complying with the evolving digital landscape in India.
