US Judge Strikes Down Trump Policy Suspending Immigrant Visas for 75 Countries

WASHINGTON, AUG. 21, 2026 (VoM News) — A U.S. Federal judge Friday threw out a Trump administration policy suspending the issuance of visas to immigrants from 75 countries as an overreach of powers by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Reuters Reported.

“Patently unlawful,” U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas in Manhattan wrote in ordering the suspension lifted as conflicting with federal immigration law.

The January policy blocked issuance of immigrant visas based on nationalities. Immigrant groups, visa applicants, and U.S. Citizens sponsoring visas for relatives from a broad group of Latin American, Balkan, South Asian, African, Middle Eastern, and Caribbean countries filed the challenge.

The State Department argued applicants from the countries included on its list faced an “increased likelihood of becoming public charges, or burdens on society,” as they rely on U.S. Government benefits.

Trump has continued to crack down on immigrants, which his White House claims he’s using to tighten national security.

His administration’s policies have been challenged by immigration-advocacy groups who say they’ve been stripped of due process rights. – Reporting by Reuters.
