Former Delhi Minister Satyendar Jain Tells Court Delhi Jal Board Tender Was Floated After He Left Portfolio
NEW DELHI, August 19 [VoM News]: Former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain told a court Wednesday that the Delhi Jal Board tender at the centre of the corruption case was floated in December 2022, months after he was arrested and relieved of his portfolio.
Jain, who was arrested again in the case on Tuesday, said he was in jail when the tender was issued and was not handling any ministry, although he technically remained a minister. He was first arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on May 30, 2022, in a money laundering case and spent nearly 22 months in jail.
The case concerns tenders worth about Rs 1,943 crore for rehabilitation and capacity enhancement of 10 sewage treatment plants. The Delhi government’s Vigilance Department flagged alleged irregularities in a report dated May 10, 2024.
Investigators allege that tender conditions were changed to favour a particular company. The Anti-Corruption Branch has also alleged that technical requirements were restricted and that the Rohini sewage treatment plant’s capacity was increased from 15 MGD to 30 MGD, causing an alleged additional loss of around Rs 123 crore.
Jain disputed the allegations and said the expansion of existing plants was more economical than constructing new facilities. He said the original proposal was estimated at Rs 1,546 crore.
Jain and other accused were sent to judicial custody. His lawyer argued that the arrest was unlawful and unnecessary as the accused had cooperated with the investigation. The court will hear Jain’s bail plea on August 25.
