US Envoy Sergio Gor Met CM Omar Abdullah, says Jammu Kashmir Travel Advisory May Be Reviewed

SRINAGAR: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor indicated here today that Washington might reconsider its travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir if the security situation improved further in the region.

Gor was speaking after meeting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here, which was his first trip to the Union Territory.
“The United States puts out travel warnings, and every so often we re-evaluate those travel warnings. I cannot make a public announcement about that at this time,” the US Ambassador said, but expressed confidence that it will be reviewed.

Gor stated that both New Delhi and the J&K government had taken “incredible steps to improve the security” and that the existing travel warning may “turn into more, you know, more manageable to us”.

He also described J&K as a “beautiful area” for Americans seeking to visit for tourism and other activities.

The Chief Minister termed the meeting as “very good” and said the discussion was about “the excellent and growing relationship between India and the United States and how to enhance the cooperation between Jammu and Kashmir and the United States especially in tourism, in horticulture and in the new and emerging economy”.

He hoped, “The issues that currently exists that are some legacy issues will be worked on over the years”. Abdullah believed that the engagement between J&K and US would improve in the years to come.
