Sonia Gandhi Accuses Centre of ‘Brutality’ Against Student Protesters, Backs Education Reform Demands
New Delhi, July 24 (VoM News): In a major political foldup, the Chairperson Congress Parliamentary Party, Sonia Gandhi lashes on central govt for treating the protesting students as the “enemies of the nation.”
Sonia Gandhi alleged that the Mod government was treating brutally instead of listening to their concerns and demands.
In an article published in The Hindu, Gandhi said students across the country have been demanding accountability and reforms in the education system, but the government’s response had been marked by “cruelty” and suppression.
She commented while referring to the police action during the July 20 protests in Delhi, she alleged that the use of lathicharge and tear gas against demonstrators reflected a pattern of intolerance towards dissent, and drew the parallels with the police action during the 2020 anti-CAA protests and the protests by wrestlers.
She accused the centre of discrediting the student movement by branding dissent as anti-national instead of meeting with students for demands.
She has also extended the support for education reforms in the country.
While accusing the Education Minister Dharminder Pradhan, she said that he miserably fails to address concerns over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and claiming his refusal to resign had intensified public anger.
The Congress leader also criticised the government’s education policies, alleging reduced spending on school and higher education, closure of public schools and a lack of accountability in handling examination-related issues.
