90% of Katra-Banihal Rail-Line Completed, Seamless Connectivity for Kashmir Imminent
In a significant update regarding the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla-Rail Link (USBRL) project, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Surender Mahi declared on Monday that an impressive 90% of the track work for the 111-km-long Katra-Banihal rail line has been successfully completed. Mahi conveyed this information during a press briefing at Sumber Railway Station, indicating that only approximately 10-12 kilometers of track work remains to be finished.
Mahi underscored the achievement of track laying up to Sumbar, highlighting that pending work is primarily concentrated in the areas of telecommunications, Environment and Housekeeping Management Department (EnHM), while signaling work has already been accomplished. Addressing challenges in the T1 tunnel, Mahi acknowledged geological issues and stressed the importance of careful mining to prevent loose falls.

He reassured that all necessary precautions are being taken and expressed confidence in the timely completion of the tunnel.Providing further details on the developments at Anji Bridge, the CAO USBRL mentioned that ongoing concrete work on the deck is currently in progress, with track laying in that section set to follow. He stated, “Out of the total 120.6 kilometers, approximately 90 kilometers have been completed.” Although the finalization of the remaining stretch will require some time, Mahi assured that Kashmir will soon be seamlessly connected with Katra.
It is noteworthy that the completion of the initial 161 km stretch was achieved in three distinct phases. In the previous month, the Indian Railways successfully conducted a trolley run on the critical Banihal-Khari railway stretch of the USBRL project. Preparations for the operationalization of Khari, Sumbar, and Sangaldan Railway Stations are well underway, with buildings and other infrastructure nearing completion.
In March of this year, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had announced the upcoming operation of the country’s first indigenous semi-high-speed train on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail route, anticipated to commence by the year’s end. He also indicated that the Udhampur-Banihal track, connecting Jammu with Srinagar, would be completed by December of this year or early the following year.
