66 Lakh Students Fail 2023 Class X, XII Board Exams: Education Ministry Report

    Key Highlights:

    • 66 lakh students failed Class X and XII in 2023, with higher failure rates in state boards.
    • Performance disparity persists across central and state boards, highlighting challenges in education.
    • Girls outperform boys in government schools, while boys dominate private institutions.

In 2023, nearly 66 lakh students failed to clear their Class X and XII board exams, as reported by the Ministry of Education. The analysis, which reviewed 59 examination boards, revealed significant disparities in performance between central and state boards, as well as across different streams and mediums.

Central board students experienced a lower failure rate, with 6% in Class X and 12% in Class XII, compared to state board students, where 16% failed Class X and 18% failed Class XII. A total of 33.5 lakh students were unable to advance to Class XI, and 32.4 lakh students failed to complete their higher secondary education.

The report also highlighted the diversity in examination structures, with the duration of Class X exams ranging from 8 days in Bihar to 34 days under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). For Class XII, the duration varied from 10 days in Bihar to 63 days in Punjab.

Language choice played a critical role, with Marathi, Punjabi, and Bengali-speaking students achieving the highest pass rates. Despite overall progress, significant disparities remain, particularly between genders and socio-economic groups. Girls surpassed boys in government schools, while boys were more numerous in private institutions.

The report emphasizes the need for a unified board system and standardized curricula to address the performance gap, particularly in states like Odisha and West Bengal, where the disparity between Class X and XII results has widened.
