6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Kathmandu Nepal
On a fateful Sunday, Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, experienced the unsettling force of a 6.1 magnitude earthquake, as measured on the Richter scale. This seismic event, originating from the Dhading district, was registered by the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre at 7:39 am. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties or significant damage resulting from the tremor.
The impact of this earthquake extended beyond the confines of Kathmandu, with tremors being felt in neighboring districts within the Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. Nepal, due to its unique geographical location at the convergence of the Tibetan and Indian tectonic plates, regularly experiences such seismic activity.
These tectonic plates steadily advance towards each other by about two meters each century, resulting in accumulated pressure that is periodically released in the form of earthquakes.Nepal’s history is marked by seismic events, including the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake of 2015, which claimed the lives of approximately 9,000 people, with subsequent aftershocks compounding the destruction.
A sobering fact noted in the government’s post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA) report is that Nepal ranks as the 11th most earthquake-prone country globally, underlining the country’s vulnerability to such natural disasters.
