Prominent Author Gita Mehta, Sister of Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik Passes Away.
A Legacy Beyond Nepotism
Gita Mehta, a prominent figure in the literary world and a scion of Odisha’s esteemed Patnaik family, left an indelible mark with her remarkable contributions to literature. The elder sister of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Gita Mehta was more than just a member of the “first family” of Odisha; she was a writer of exceptional talent and insight. Her literary journey began in the 1970s when she burst onto the scene with works like Karma Kola and Snakes and Ladders. However, it was her 1993 short story collection, A River Sutra, that catapulted her to international acclaim, even before the term “Indo-Anglian literature” gained prominence.
A River Sutra: A Cultural Masterpiece
At the heart of A River Sutra lies a profound exploration of the conflict between purity and passion. Mehta tackled this theme with her unique blend of tragedy and comedy, enriching the narrative with a treasure trove of wise sayings. The book not only represents Indian culture but also offers a dual perspective, highlighting how the West perceives it. Set against the backdrop of mid-to-late 20th century India and the majestic river Narmada in central India, the novel delves deep into music, religion, and India’s cultural landmarks.
Declining the Padma Shri: A Noble Gesture
In 2019, Gita Mehta was honored with India’s fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, by the BJP government, recognizing her exceptional contributions to literature and education. However, she chose to “politely decline” the prestigious award, citing concerns about its timing during an election year. Her decision was rooted in her desire to avoid any misconstrual of nepotism and to spare her brother, the Chief Minister, from potential embarrassment. She believed in the sanctity of such honors and didn’t wish to be a source of controversy.
A Critique of Subjective Awards
Mehta was known for her profound detachment from institutional accolades. Her views on awards were candid and thought-provoking. She questioned the subjective nature of the process, drawing comparisons like, “Why Ravi Shankar, but not Vilayat Khan for the Bharat Ratna?” Her skepticism challenged the selection criteria of such honors and encouraged introspection.
A Multifaceted Career
Beyond her literary pursuits, Gita Mehta ventured into producing and directing television documentaries for prominent networks in the UK, Europe, and the US. Notably, during 1970-1971, she served as a television war correspondent for the US network NBC, covering the harrowing events in Bangladesh. Her work in documenting the crisis in Bangladesh earned her well-deserved recognition.
Gita Mehta’s life was intertwined with literature, culture, and a commitment to uphold the integrity of awards. Her marriage to Sonny Mehta, the former head of the Alfred A. Knopf publishing house, further solidified her connection to the world of publishing. Her passing marks the end of an era in the literary landscape of India, but her legacy will continue to inspire generations of writers and thinkers.
