World Heart Day 2024: Complications, Risk Factors and Prevention of Heart Diseases

    Key Highlights:

    • Recognizing heart disease symptoms can save lives.
    • Risk factors include smoking, obesity, and uncontrolled diabetes.
    • A healthy lifestyle is crucial for preventing heart disease.

World Heart Day, observed on September 29th, raises awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and promotes heart health. CVDs include a variety of conditions like coronary artery disease, heart arrhythmias, and congenital heart defects. Common symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and fainting should never be ignored.

Complications from heart disease are serious. A blocked artery can cause a heart attack, potentially damaging the heart muscle. Heart failure occurs when the heart can’t pump enough blood, leading to fatigue and shortness of breath.

Stroke is another life-threatening condition where blood flow to the brain is blocked, and sudden cardiac arrest can result in death if not treated immediately.

Several risk factors contribute to heart disease. Smoking, poor diet, high blood pressure, diabetes, and lack of exercise all increase the likelihood of developing CVDs.

Genetic factors, such as a family history of heart disease, also play a role. Additionally, as people age, their risk of heart issues rises.

Prevention is key to reducing the risk of heart disease. Lifestyle changes like eating a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, quitting smoking, and managing conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure are critical.

Maintaining good oral hygiene, managing stress, and avoiding alcohol or drug abuse are also important preventive measures. In some cases, doctors may recommend medications, such as anti-platelet drugs, to reduce the risk of blood clots.
