The state of Madhya Pradesh is gearing up for an intense political battle, with both the BJP and the Congress vying for the support of the 2.78 crore women voters. In recent years, a significant electoral trend has emerged in India, with women turning out to vote in larger numbers than men. Moreover, these women have become a distinct voice with unique voting preferences that may differ from those of the men in their households.

Income Support Schemes: A Game-Changer for Women

Both major parties, the Congress and the BJP, have recognized the importance of women voters and have announced income support schemes aimed at winning their favor. The Congress offers ₹1500 per month in income support and ₹500 gas cylinders, while the BJP introduced the Ladli Behena scheme, increasing support from ₹1000 to ₹1250 per month, with a promise to further raise it to ₹3000.

A Divided Response: Women’s Views on Political Promises

Women in various regions of Madhya Pradesh have diverse opinions about these schemes and the political parties behind them. Some, like Kamaljeet Kaur from Banskheri village, express confidence in Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s leadership and believe that he will return as the CM. Others, like Kavita Dhakar from Guna’s Bamori, find it challenging to trust the Congress and prefer the BJP’s promises due to existing improvements in their lives.

In contrast, some women, like Ruby Dhakar, are critical of the state of infrastructure and service delivery in their areas, irrespective of the political promises. Sunita Kumari in Bhopal acknowledges both schemes but has concerns about the consistency of support under different administrations.

With the election day approaching, the silence among women voters may only be temporary, and their choices will ultimately determine the political landscape in Madhya Pradesh.
