Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar, the Vice Chief of Army Staff, has assumed the role of the new Northern Army Commander, succeeding Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, who is slated to move to Army Headquarters as the Vice Chief of Army Staff.

Before his elevation to the strategic command position, Lt Gen Kumar held crucial roles as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff and Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) at Army Headquarters. His extensive background encompasses expertise in intelligence, operations, force structuring, operational logistics, and technology infusion, gleaned from his recent assignments.

A product of Sainik School Bijapur and the National Defence Academy, Lt Gen Kumar was commissioned into the 1 Assam Regiment in June 1985. His distinguished career includes commanding the 59 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion (ASSAM), an Infantry Brigade, and an Infantry Division on the Line of Control, as well as the dynamic White Knight Corps in the Northern Command, as per official sources.

Throughout his career, the General Officer has undertaken various staff and instructional roles. These include an instructional tenure at Infantry School, Mhow, serving as the Senior Operations Officer in the United Nations Sector in Cambodia, holding the position of Colonel (Policy) in the Military Secretary Branch, being part of the Indian Army Training Team in Lesotho, acting as the Brigadier General Staff (Operations) of a Corps in the Eastern Theatre, and serving as the Additional Director General Military Intelligence and Director General Military Intelligence at Army Headquarters.
