Uttarakhand Government Gears Up for Uniform Civil Code Implementation
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami affirmed that his government is poised to receive the draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the upcoming year. This will initiate planning for the subsequent steps towards its implementation, he stated in response to queries regarding the UCC implementation in the state.
Earlier, during the Shashtipurti Mahotsav of Sadhvi Ritambhara in Mathura, Dhami emphasized the state government’s commitment to implement the Uniform Civil Code, noting that it would soon be presented in the Assembly for discussion and consideration.
The Uttarakhand Cabinet had earlier ratified decisions made by a five-member committee entrusted with formulating the UCC draft in the state. The committee, headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, has been working on this pivotal legislation. Although the detailed report from the committee is yet to be submitted, the cabinet endorsed the steps taken so far.
The Uniform Civil Code aims to create a standardized legal framework across various personal laws concerning matters like marriage, inheritance, and adoption. This initiative, enshrined in Article 44 of the Indian Constitution, signifies the state’s effort to establish uniformity in civil laws across the nation.
The topic of the Uniform Civil Code has been a subject of debate and contention, sparking diverse opinions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, echoing the ideals of the Constitution, advocated for the implementation of a common code, highlighting its importance in maintaining unity and adherence to shared principles across the country.
