US Ambassador Compares Delhi’s Pollution to Los Angeles, Air Quality Remains ‘Very Poor’
The United States Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, made a striking comparison between the air quality in Delhi and his childhood memories of growing up in Los Angeles. He mentioned that the pollution in Delhi reminded him of a time when Los Angeles had some of the most polluted air in the United States. Just like in Los Angeles, where children were cautioned against playing outside due to poor air quality, Garcetti revealed that his daughter received a similar warning while going to school in Delhi.
Delhi’s Worsening Air Quality
Garcetti’s observations come at a time when Delhi is grappling with deteriorating air quality as the winter season approaches. The national capital has experienced “very poor” air quality for the fifth consecutive day, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 343, according to SAFAR-India.
Air Quality Index (AQI) Explained
The Air Quality Index (AQI) serves as a vital tool for conveying the air quality status to the public in a clear and understandable manner. It condenses complex air quality data into a single index value, providing a simple way to gauge air quality. The AQI ranges from 0 to 500, with lower values indicating better air quality. A range of 0-100 is considered good, 100-200 is moderate, 200-300 is poor, 300-400 is very poor, and 400-500 or higher is classified as severe.
Despite efforts to mitigate pollution through a 15-point winter action plan, Delhi continues to grapple with poor air quality, raising concerns about the health and well-being of its residents. The situation highlights the need for sustained efforts to address air pollution in the region.
