Uri Witnesses Tourism Boom with 70000 Visitors Amidst LoC Peace
After the recent ceasefire agreement that brought tranquility to the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan in Kashmir, the Indian Army has taken a significant step by welcoming tourists to the renowned Kaman Aman Setu Bridge. This move has led to a remarkable surge in tourism, with a record-breaking 70,000 visitors exploring the area since its reopening this year.
The Indian Army is actively promoting key locations near the LoC, such as Kaman Post in the Uri sector of the Baramulla district, as a tourist hotspot, as indicated by official data reporting a tourist influx of 70,000 this year alone.
Originally constructed to facilitate the historic cross-LoC Karawan-e-Aman bus service, the Kaman Aman Setu Bridge serves as a symbolic connection between India and Pakistan, reuniting divided families. Now, the Indian Army has extended access to this bridge for tourists visiting the Valley, with the intention of benefiting the local population residing in the vicinity of the Line of Control.
In some areas, the Indian Army is also actively assisting locals by facilitating the opening of homestays and guest houses. The move is being hailed as a positive development, opening up local tourism opportunities in places like the Uri sector.
“The decision to open Kaman Post to tourists is a commendable step by the Indian Army. This move will not only boost local tourism in areas like the Uri sector but will also benefit the people of Uri, especially those interested in visiting the region’s main power projects. Local businesses, including shops and restaurants, stand to gain from this initiative,” remarked a local official.
The initiative aims to stimulate the economy of these border regions and create job and business opportunities for the youth. Additionally, it seeks to raise awareness among citizens about the historical significance of the area and the sacrifices made by soldiers. The installation of ‘Veer Path,’ featuring busts of soldiers who laid down their lives in various wars, serves as a tribute and inspiration for the younger generation.
“The commendable efforts by the Indian Army in upgrading the Kaman Post are truly uplifting. As locals, we extend an invitation to the entire country to visit us, learn about the history of this place, and witness the inspiring memorials dedicated to our fallen soldiers,” expressed local residents.
“Uri, with its captivating beauty, now stands as a must-visit destination for tourists. The government and the Indian Army’s concerted efforts to promote the Uri region are praiseworthy,” stated Mohammad Amin, a local resident.
Looking ahead, there is hope among locals that the government will include Uri on the tourism map, similar to other prominent destinations in Kashmir. This inclusion would not only boost tourism but also create employment opportunities for the local residents who are eager to engage with the increasing influx of tourists, as emphasized by Bashir Ahmad, another local resident.
After years of closure due to the suspension of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad Bus service, the gate of Kaman Aman Setu has finally opened. At the same location, the Indian Army has taken the initiative to establish the first café near the LoC, further enhancing the experience for visitors to this historically significant area.
