Under-Construction UP Bridge Worth ₹ 8 Crore Collapses
In a concerning development, a segment of an 80-meter-long bridge under construction across the Magai River, overseen by Setu Nigam, suffered a collapse due to a broken beam, as confirmed by district officials on Monday. This incident has sparked immediate attention to the safety standards and quality control measures in infrastructure projects.
Investigation Initiated Following Bridge Collapse
The District Magistrate revealed that the bridge, designed to span the Magai River between Katharia and Firozpur, was being executed by Setu Nigam at a total cost exceeding Rs 8 crore. Following the collapse, a swift response was initiated, with the formation of a three-member investigative team tasked with delivering a comprehensive report within three days. Thankfully, there have been no reports of casualties or loss of life resulting from the bridge failure.
Stringent Action and Independent Inquiry Pursued
District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar expressed concern over the incident, highlighting the substantial investment of Rs 8 crore 15 lakh in the construction of the 80-meter-long bridge. He emphasized that stern action would be taken against those found responsible for the structural failure. A formal complaint will be lodged with the Government, ensuring that accountability is upheld.
This unfortunate incident echoes a similar occurrence in June, where the under-construction Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge in Bihar’s Bhagalpur collapsed. In response, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Patna High Court, urging an independent inquiry into the collapse. The petitioner, Manibhushan Pratap Sengar, emphasized the necessity of an impartial investigation rather than relying solely on a departmental inquiry. He also called for appropriate action against SP Singla Company, the entity responsible for the bridge’s construction.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of adhering to stringent safety standards and quality control protocols in large-scale infrastructure projects. Ensuring the structural integrity of such projects is vital not only for the safety of workers but also for the long-term safety and well-being of the communities they serve.
