India’s Aspirations for UNSC Membership

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his understanding of India’s aspirations to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). In an exclusive interview, he acknowledged the need to adjust the composition of the UNSC to reflect the realities of the modern world. Guterres noted that the current composition of the UNSC represents the post-World War II world and that today’s world is vastly different. India, as the world’s most populous country, holds a significant role in this changing landscape.

Reform of the UNSC

While Guterres expressed his understanding of India’s aspirations, he emphasized that the decision to reform the UNSC rests with member states. He stressed the importance of adapting the UNSC’s composition to align with today’s global realities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently called for UN reform in line with the 21st century’s changing dynamics, highlighting the need to move away from a mid-20th century approach.

Current Composition of the UNSC

The UNSC currently consists of five permanent members (Russia, the UK, China, France, and the United States) and ten non-permanent member countries elected for two-year terms. Permanent members have the power to veto substantive resolutions.

India’s Proposal for the African Union in the G20

Guterres praised India’s proposal to include the African Union as a permanent member of the G20, calling it an excellent idea. He highlighted that the African Union’s inclusion would provide the continent with a stronger voice in global decision-making forums like the G20, addressing past inequalities stemming from colonialism.

International Year of Millets Initiative

The UN Secretary-General commended India’s initiative to launch the International Year of Millets for 2023, emphasizing its significance for global food security. Guterres noted the importance of traditional methods for solving food security issues and recognized millets as a valuable tool for addressing these challenges.

India’s Contribution to UN Peacekeeping

Guterres expressed the UN’s gratitude for India’s significant contribution to UN peacekeeping missions, acknowledging the country’s leadership in this regard.

UN Summit of the Future

Regarding the UN Summit of the Future, scheduled for next year, Guterres viewed it as an opportunity to plant the seeds of transformation, aiming to ensure that the Global South receives its due representation in decision-making processes.
