In a tragic incident in northwest Pakistan on Thursday, two young girls were killed, and six others, including five children and a van driver, were critically injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a school van.
The attack occurred in the Dheri Kot area of Attock district, which lies near the borders of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces.
The children were on their way to school when the gunmen indiscriminately targeted their vehicle, leaving two girls aged between 10 and 11 dead.
The five other children and the van driver sustained critical injuries and were immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Preliminary investigations by the police suggest that the attack was likely motivated by personal enmity towards the driver of the school van.
Authorities have registered a case against a suspect believed to be involved in this brutal act, and an investigation is underway to apprehend those responsible.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly denouncing the attack. He described the shooting as a cruel and gruesome act and expressed his deep sorrow for the loss suffered by the families of the victims.
The Prime Minister also directed the authorities to take swift and stern action against the perpetrators and ensure that the injured children receive the best possible medical care.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also expressed his sympathies with the bereaved families and called for rigorous efforts to bring the attackers to justice.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting ongoing concerns about violence and security in the region.
