Passengers Stranded as Narmada River Surpasses Danger Mark
Train traffic on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route has come to a standstill for nearly 11 hours since Sunday night. This disruption is a result of the Narmada River surging above the danger mark between Bharuch and Ankleshwar stations in Gujarat, as confirmed by Western Railway on Monday.
Western Railway’s Chief PRO, Sumit Thakur, disclosed that train operations between Bharuch and Ankleshwar stations in the Vadodara division along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route were halted after Narmada River waters surged above the danger mark at brigade no.502, around 11:50 pm on Sunday.
Stranded Passengers Receive Relief Efforts
Due to the river’s rising waters, all passenger and goods trains on both sides of the river have been held up, leading to passengers being stranded onboard. In response, Western Railway has initiated efforts to provide relief, including refreshments, tea, and water, to these passengers.
Sumit Thakur expressed optimism that the water level is gradually receding and may soon fall below the danger mark. He also noted the establishment of helpline numbers to assist passengers in obtaining train-related information, demonstrating the railway’s commitment to passenger support during this challenging time.
Train Cancellations Compound the Disruption
The flood’s impact has led to the cancellation of at least one-and-a-half dozen trains, including the popular Mumbai-Ahmedabad Tejas Express and Shatabdi Express, as indicated in a release by Western Railway. This unfortunate situation has caused significant inconvenience to commuters and travelers on this vital route.
Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc Across Gujarat
The disruption in train services is a direct consequence of heavy rains that pounded many parts of Gujarat on Sunday. These rains triggered flooding in low-lying areas, resulting in the isolation of several villages. The Narmada River and other water bodies were in full spate, adding to the challenges faced by the region’s officials and residents.
In conclusion, the train disruption caused by the Narmada River surpassing the danger mark has led to significant inconveniences for passengers traveling between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. As relief efforts are underway, the Western Railway is diligently working to restore normalcy on this critical route. The impact of heavy rains across Gujarat further underscores the need for swift and coordinated responses to natural disasters.
