Tragic Explosion at Nickel Plant in Eastern Indonesia Claims 12 Lives
A devastating explosion rocked an Indonesian nickel-processing plant in the Morowali Industrial Park of Central Sulawesi province on Sunday, resulting in a fatal incident that claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals and left 39 others injured, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the complex.
The incident occurred at PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel’s facility at approximately 5:30 am local time.
According to the spokesperson, the victims comprised seven Indonesians and five foreign workers, although their nationalities were not specified.
The explosion transpired during repair work on a furnace, igniting a flammable liquid that subsequently triggered a blast, causing adjacent oxygen tanks to explode.
An initial investigation indicated that the fire erupted due to the ignition of the flammable substance during maintenance operations. Emergency responders managed to contain the fire by Sunday morning.
The industrial park’s operating firm expressed profound grief over the tragic occurrence, highlighting that the identified victims’ remains had been repatriated.
The region is a vital hub for nickel production, a crucial component used in electric vehicle batteries and stainless steel. However, Beijing’s burgeoning investments in the area have spurred discontent among workers regarding labor conditions.
This calamity echoes a previous unfortunate event in January, where a riot during a protest over safety and remuneration issues led to the deaths of two workers, including a Chinese national, at another nickel smelting plant within the same industrial park.
The incident underscored ongoing tensions regarding working conditions at these industrial facilities.
