Officials in Jammu and Kashmir reported that the Traffic Police have successfully seized a vehicle with a counterfeit registration plate in Shopian district, and another suspicious vehicle has been identified in Budgam district in central Kashmir.

In a rapid operation led by SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir RP Singh, a Maruti Alto K10 with the fake registration number JK02CF 2710 was confiscated on the evening of January 9, 2024. Acting on credible information, the seizure was carried out under Section 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Authorities discovered discrepancies in the engine and chassis numbers, as well as the High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on both the front and rear of the vehicle during the inspection. Further investigation revealed disparities between the vehicle class mentioned in the original and duplicate Registration Certificates (RC).

The traffic police, operating under the supervision of SSP RP Singh and DySP Traffic Pulwama Shopian Dr. Mudasser Tramboo, promptly shared the information with the district police. This led to the initiation of a criminal case against the accused, Mohd Iqbal Bhat, a resident of Pashpora Keegam Shopian. The case, registered under FIR No. 10/2024, Sections 420, 467, 468, 471 IPC, is dated January 10, 2024, at PS Shopian.

Furthermore, in Budgam, another vehicle with a counterfeit registration plate was identified, and legal proceedings under the Motor Vehicle/Criminal Act have been initiated.

SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir RP Singh highlighted the significance of E-challans in detecting vehicles with fake registration numbers. He urged lawful vehicle owners to promptly report any suspicious online challan messages to rural traffic headquarters for swift identification and legal action against vehicles with counterfeit registration plates.
