Three Former TMC Rajya Sabha MPs Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Prakash Chik Baraik Join BJP Ahead of Bypolls
West Bengal, July 09, 2026 [VoM News]: Three ex-Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha members-Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Prakash Chik Baraik-attached to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday only two days after the Election Commission announced bypolls to the Upper House seats left behind by them. Their inclusion has led others to believe that the BJP could very well push them in the upcoming elections.
The three leaders were ushered into the party by West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya at the state party headquarters in Kolkata. Bhattacharya refused to comment whether the leaders would be fighting the Rajya Sabha by polls.
The move was an exception to BJP’s stand of not accommodating former TMC leaders, Bhattacharya stated. The party has not closed its doors to honest leaders not associated with corruption or abuse of power, stated Bhattacharya. The three parliamentarians would further improve BJP’s strength in West Bengal, he further added.
Sushmita Dev who had to switch over to TMC from Congress in 2021, alleged that corruption was known to her only after she had joined the party. She claimed that no corruption charges were ever leveled against her. Sukhendu Sekhar Ray too lambasted TMC over the issue of corruption.
These three leaders had leave their position in Rajya Sabha and TMC, because of defeat of their party in 2011 West Bengal Assembly elections. Their by polls result of 24 July will fill-up the vacant seats.
