TEXMiN Secures Third Place at GSI Hackathon 2024 for Innovative Mineral Hunt Techniques for Mineral Prospectivity Mapping

The hackathon results were announced during the 64th Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) Meeting 2025

New Delhi, January 23, 2025 – TEXMiN, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad announces its remarkable achievement of securing third place in the prestigious Hackathon 2024 organized by the Geological Survey of India (GSI). The hackathon, focused on “Innovative Mineral Hunt Techniques for Mineral Prospectivity Mapping,” served as a platform for generating groundbreaking solutions in mineral exploration through advanced geophysical data interpretation, multi-dataset integration, and AI/ML applications.

The TEXMiN team participated in its ongoing project on mineral prospectivity mapping of Jharkhand and surrounding regions using AI/ML techniques. Utilizing geospatial data provided by GSI and the Ministry of Mines via the National Geoscience Data Repository (NGDR), the team worked on diverse datasets, including geological, geophysical, geochemical, and remote sensing information. This data spanned a challenging 14,780 sq. km area in the southern part of Rajasthan.

Prof. Dheeraj Kumar Dy. Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad & Director, TEXMiN said, “The GSI Hackathon 2024 was a great opportunity to explore innovative approaches in mineral exploration. Our team’s success highlights the potential of AI and ML in addressing real-world challenges in the mining sector. This recognition encourages us to continue working toward safe, smart, and sustainable mining solutions.”

Shri Suraj Prakash, CEO of TEXMiN, said, “This achievement reflects our team’s hard work and dedication to using AI and ML for improving mineral exploration. Participating in the GSI Hackathon gave us the chance to showcase how advanced technologies can help identify resources efficiently. We remain committed to contributing to safe, smart, and sustainable mining practices that can benefit the industry and society.”

Prof. Partha Pratim Mandal, the project lead from TEXMiN – IIT(ISM) Dhanbad said, “ We are proud to have secured 3rd position in the Innovative Mineral Hunt Techniques for Mineral Prognostication 2024 competition, organized by the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Ministry of Mines. Representing TEXMiN and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, our team developed a cost-effective AI/ML-powered geoscientific solution for identifying critical minerals and base metal ore deposits using multi-dimensional geoscientific data. This achievement highlights our team’s capability to contribute to the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat in the field of mineral exploration.
