TamilNadu BJP Leader Condemns “Injustice” and “Unethical Investigation”

In response to the recent arrest of BJP functionaries over the removal of a flagpole in Chennai, senior BJP leader DV Sadananda Gowda has spoken out, decrying the “injustice” meted out to BJP cadre and condemning what he claims to be an “illegal and unethical investigation” by the DMK. He also revealed that the state governor has positively acknowledged the issue and plans to conduct an inquiry into the matter.

BJP Alleges Vendetta Politics and Police Aggression

Narayanan Thirupathy, BJP state vice president, questioned the necessity of the flag’s removal, labeling it “vendetta politics.” He highlighted the extensive delay in obtaining permission for the flagpole and criticized the massive police presence during the removal process. Thirupathy argued that the police’s time and energy had been squandered, and he further lamented the alleged mistreatment of BJP cadres, including women who were detained during the incident.

Arrests Follow Flagpole Controversy

The incident occurred when a flagpole outside the residence of BJP State Chief K Annamalai in Panaiyur, Chennai, was challenged by local residents. Following a protest and the removal of the flagpole by the police, BJP supporters gathered and resisted, resulting in a tense situation. Subsequently, the police arrested six individuals, including BJP Sports and Development Cell State President Amar Prasad Reddy, who was later ordered to be held in judicial custody for 15 days.

The Tamil Nadu Commissionerate detailed the events, highlighting the safety concerns associated with the flagpole’s location near electric wires. According to their statement, BJP workers stopped officials from removing the flagpole and later resorted to throwing stones at the JCB used in the removal process.

Response from K Annamalai and DMK Spokesperson

K Annamalai, the State Chief of BJP, responded to the incident, describing the DMK Government as “draconian and fascist” and asserting the resilience of BJP workers. He announced plans to install 100 flagpoles across Tamil Nadu each day for 100 days, with the 10,000th flag to be hoisted in Panaiyur, in response to the incident. DMK Spokesperson TKS Elangovan dismissed BJP’s claims of political vendetta and insisted that proper permissions must be obtained to erect flagpoles in public places.
