Taiwan Monitors Increased Chinese Military Activity Amid Rising Tensions

    Key Highlights:

    1. Taiwan detects nine Chinese military aircraft and four Coast Guard vessels near its territory.
    2. Eight aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait median line into Taiwan’s ADIZ.
    3. Taiwan responds with aircraft, naval ships, and coastal missile systems.

On Saturday, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported detecting nine Chinese military aircraft and four Chinese Coast Guard vessels around Taiwan, as reported by Taiwan News. Of these aircraft, eight crossed the Taiwan Strait median line into the southwestern portion of Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ).

In response to this incursion, Taiwan deployed aircraft, naval ships, and coastal-based missile systems to monitor and respond to the PLA activity. This increased military presence in the Taiwan Strait region reflects the growing geopolitical tensions between Taiwan and China. Beijing considers Taiwan a renegade province and has repeatedly stated its intention to reunify the island with the mainland, potentially by force.

The MND has been issuing daily reports on Chinese military activities, documenting the presence of Chinese aircraft, drones, and balloons crossing the Taiwan Strait median line. Since May, Taiwan has tracked Chinese military aircraft 463 times and naval/coast guard vessels 272 times. These activities are part of China’s gray zone tactics, which involve incremental increases in military presence to achieve security objectives without direct and significant use of force.

The recent spike in military drills, the largest in over a year, occurred shortly after Taiwan inaugurated its new president, Lai Ching-te, known for his pro-sovereignty stance, which Beijing opposes.

In response to the situation, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson urged US Congress members to stop interfering in China’s internal affairs and to cease supporting Taiwan’s independence movements, asserting that such actions undermine China-US relations and cross-Strait peace and stability.
