Strategic Enhancement: Indian Defense Forces to Add Nirbhay Class Cruise Missiles
In a major advancement for India’s defense capabilities, all three branches of the defense forces are set to incorporate the Nirbhay class long-range cruise missiles into their arsenal. This move, facilitated by the indigenously developed missiles by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will significantly boost the military’s strike range, with capabilities extending over 1,000 kilometers. The integration of these sub-sonic missiles marks a pivotal step in enhancing India’s strategic offensive capabilities.
Advanced Stage of Missile Induction
The government is reportedly in the advanced stages of considering a proposal to induct the Nirbhay class cruise missiles across all defense forces. This development comes two years after the government gave clearance for the missile’s inclusion in the inventory of two services. The induction of these subsonic missiles, alongside the existing supersonic BrahMos cruise missiles, will provide a formidable combination in the forces’ arsenal, offering diverse strategic options during conflicts.
Formation of a Dedicated Rocket Force
The Nirbhay class missiles will also play a key role in the newly forming rocket force of the Indian defense forces. This stepwise creation of a specialized unit underscores the strategic shift towards integrating advanced missile technology into conventional military roles. Additionally, the forces are considering the induction of medium-range ballistic missiles to further bolster their conventional warfare capabilities.
Integrated Force and Enhanced BrahMos Range
The integration of ballistic and cruise missiles in the defense forces’ inventory is expected to lead to the formation of an integrated wing, further strengthening India’s military might. This integration is accompanied by a significant enhancement in the range of BrahMos cruise missiles, a development that further augments India’s strategic reach. A long-range test of these upgraded cruise missiles is also anticipated in the near future, marking yet another milestone in India’s defense advancements.
