SRINAGAR: Srinagar has been officially designated as a ‘World Craft City’ by the World Crafts Council International (WCC) during a ceremony held on Wednesday.
The recognition was celebrated at an event at SKICC Srinagar, where Saad Al Qaddumi, President of the WCC, delivered a speech highlighting the significance of this achievement.
“I am honoured and proud to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the government officials and the citizens of Srinagar on acquiring the World Crafts Council’s designation as a World Craft City,” said Qaddumi.
He noted that Srinagar has joined its well-deserved place among the 65 World Craft Cities worldwide. He emphasised the rigorous process involved in achieving this designation and underscored its importance.

“This city is a testament to the hard work and prestige of Srinagar’s artisans, who have preserved and cherished the city’s craft traditions over generations,” he said. He added that Srinagar’s crafts are not only a source of beauty and pride but also play a crucial role in the social and economic development of the region.
The WCC President added, “The recognition by the World Crafts Council enhances cultural exchanges and fosters mutual understanding among different communities worldwide. The designation of Srinagar as a World Craft City is a step towards safeguarding the Indus heritage and promoting sustainable development across the sector.”
The designation of Srinagar as a World Craft City not only celebrates its cultural heritage but also paves the way for future growth and development in the craft sector, ensuring the legacy of its artisans continues to thrive.
Srinagar is the fourth city in India to receive the prestigious title of ‘World Craft City’.
