Srinagar Faces Escalating Dog Bite Crisis Over 4,000 Cases in Six Months.
Srinagar, a picturesque city in India, is grappling with a growing dog bite crisis, with a startling 4,396 reported cases in just the past six months. Officials at the Anti-Rabies Clinic of Srinagar’s Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital have raised concerns about this alarming surge in dog bite incidents, attributing it primarily to the increasing prevalence of dogs throughout the valley.
Between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023, a staggering total of 6,875 bite cases were recorded, with the majority originating within Srinagar itself, according to an official from the Anti-Rabies Clinic SMHS. Disturbingly, the situation seems to be worsening, as 4,396 fresh cases were reported from April 1 to September 27 of the same year. If this trend continues, it is feared that the number of cases may reach 10,000 by March 2024.

Providing a historical perspective, the official shared annual data on bite cases over the past several years. From April 2015 to March 2016, there were 7,061 reported cases at the ARC SMHS. Subsequent years witnessed a continuing rise: 5,832 cases from April 2016 to March 2017, 6,802 from April 2017 to March 2018, 6,397 from April 2018 to March 2019, 6,139 from April 2019 to March 2020, 4,808 from April 2020 to March 2021, and 5,469 from April 2021 to March 2022. The latest figures reveal a worrying escalation with 6,875 cases from April 2022 to March 2023 and 4,396 cases reported to date in the current year.
The surge in dog bite cases highlights the urgent need for measures to address the growing human-dog confrontations in the region. Public awareness campaigns, responsible pet ownership, and enhanced animal control efforts may be essential steps in curbing this concerning trend and ensuring the safety of Srinagar’s residents.
