SKIMS-Soura Records 4095 New Cancer-Cases in 2023, Total Surpasses 44,000 Since 2014
SKIMS Soura, the prominent tertiary care hospital in Kashmir, has recorded a staggering 4,095 new cases of cancer as of September this year, bringing the total number of cases since 2014 to 44,112. The data reveals a concerning trend in the region.
Breaking down the figures, 3,940 cases were documented in 2014, with subsequent years witnessing an upward trajectory – 4,417 in 2015, 4,320 in 2016, 4,352 in 2017, 4,816 in 2018, 4,337 in 2019, 3,814 in 2020, 4,727 in 2021, 5,294 in 2022, and 4,095 in the ongoing year up to September. Officials have expressed alarm at the steep rise in cancer cases, highlighting that lung cancer prevails among men, while breast cancer is increasingly affecting women.

Citing primary causes, officials point to smoking as a major factor contributing to male cancer cases, along with family history, obesity, and age. They emphasize the crucial role of early detection in providing timely treatment, which can significantly impact the chances of saving lives.
Union Health Ministry data reveals a total of 51,577 reported cancer cases in Jammu and Kashmir over the last four years (2019-2022). The annual breakdown shows 12,396 cases in 2019, 12,726 in 2020, 13,060 in 2021, and 13,395 in 2022. Tragically, 35,623 individuals in the region succumbed to cancer between 2018 and 2022, with yearly fatalities of 6,824 in 2018, 7,003 in 2019, 7,189 in 2020, 7,211 in 2021, and 7,396 in 2022.
Interestingly, a 2012 SKIMS study attributed the escalating cancer incidence to “dietary practices and lifestyle choices,” along with the consumption of high-salt-content foods. The gravity of the situation underscores the pressing need for comprehensive efforts to address the root causes and implement effective preventive measures in the region.
