Significant Seizures in Madhya Pradesh Ahead of State Assembly Elections
In Madhya Pradesh, enforcement agencies have conducted extensive seizures of cash, liquor, drugs, and other valuable items totaling nearly Rs 300 crore since the imposition of the model code of conduct for the state assembly elections on October 9. The state, which has 230 assembly seats, recorded a voter turnout of nearly 76 percent in the recent polls, with the vote counting scheduled for December 3.
Details of the Seizures
- Cash and Illegal Items: Anupam Rajan, the state Chief Electoral Officer, reported that joint teams of the Flying Surveillance Team (FST), Static Surveillance Team (SST), and police seized Rs 40.18 crore in cash, along with significant quantities of illicit liquor, drugs, and precious metals.
- Breakdown of Seized Goods: The seized items include 34.68 lakh litres of illegal liquor valued at Rs 65.56 crore, narcotics worth Rs 17.25 crore, and gold, silver, and other precious metals worth Rs 92.76 crore. Additional materials worth Rs 124.18 crore were also confiscated.
Comparison with Previous Elections
- Increase in Seizures: The amount seized during this election period marks a substantial increase compared to the 2018 polls, where cash and other items worth a total of Rs 72.93 crore were seized.
These seizures reflect the extensive measures taken by the election and law enforcement agencies to ensure fair and free elections in Madhya Pradesh. The significant increase in the value of seized items compared to the previous election cycle indicates heightened vigilance and enforcement efforts to curb illegal activities during the election period.
