Significant Drop in Stubble Burning in Punjab and Haryana
The Union Environment Ministry has reported a notable reduction in stubble burning incidents in Punjab and Haryana, marking a positive environmental development. In Punjab, the number of stubble burning incidents saw a substantial decrease from 83,002 in 2020 to 36,663 in 2023, which is a 27% reduction compared to 2022. This downward trend is even more pronounced when compared to previous years, with a 49% and 56% reduction compared to 2021 and 2020 respectively.
Haryana Follows Suit with Reduced Farm Fires
Haryana has also witnessed a significant decline in stubble burning. The farm fire count, which stood at 4,202 in 2020, increased in 2021 but then showed a sharp decline to 2,303 in 2023. This represents a 37% decrease from 2022, and even more substantial reductions of 67% and 45% when compared to 2021 and 2020.
District-Wise Improvements and Remaining Challenges
In Punjab, four districts reported over a 50% decrease in stubble burning in 2023 compared to 2022. Five other districts showed improvements in the range of 27% to 50%. However, three districts in Haryana demonstrated a significant reduction of over 50% in stubble burning incidents in 2023 compared to the previous year. While five districts showed improvements of up to 37%, there were still five districts where fire counts increased in 2023.
Encouraging Trends in Daily Fire Counts
The frequency of high-count fire days has also reduced. In Punjab, the number of days with over 2000 fire counts decreased significantly from 16 in 2020 to just four in 2023. Similarly, in Haryana, days with farm fires exceeding 100 counts dropped from 16 in 2020 to three in 2023.
