Severe Turbulence Injures 12 on Qatar Airways Flight QR017
Key Highlights:
- Severe turbulence over Turkey injured 12 people on board.
- Emergency services met the aircraft upon landing in Dublin.
- Eight passengers were hospitalized; flight operations remained normal.
A Qatar Airways flight, QR017, from Doha landed safely at Dublin Airport on Sunday after experiencing severe turbulence over Turkey, which injured 12 people. The aircraft landed at 13:00 local time and was immediately met by emergency services including Airport Police and the Fire and Rescue department.
Dublin Airport officials reported, “Qatar Airways flight QR017 from Doha landed safely as scheduled. Upon landing, the aircraft was met by emergency services due to 6 passengers and 6 crew reporting injuries after the aircraft experienced turbulence while airborne over Turkey.” The airport continued to provide assistance to passengers and airline staff on the ground.
Despite the incident, flight operations at Dublin Airport remained unaffected. All passengers were assessed for injuries before disembarking, and eight were subsequently taken to the hospital. The return flight to Doha, QR018, was expected to operate with a delay.
This incident follows a similar turbulence-related event earlier in the week involving a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Bangkok. The severe turbulence injured 71 passengers, and one British man, Geoff Kitchen, died on board due to an existing heart condition. Over 20 passengers on that flight suffered spinal injuries.
The recent turbulence incidents highlight the ongoing risks associated with severe weather conditions during flights, prompting heightened awareness and preparedness among airlines and airport emergency services.
