Seven Students Arrested in Ganderbal for celebrating India’s World Cup Final loss
In Ganderbal, Jammu and Kashmir, a group of seven students from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology found themselves in legal trouble after a heated altercation with students from outside the Union Territory following India’s defeat to Australia in the Men’s Cricket World Cup final on November 19, as reported by The Scroll.
As per information obtained from a first information report, the students are facing charges under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and Sections 505 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code, pertaining to public mischief and criminal intimidation. Confirming the arrests, Ganderbal Superintendent of Police Nikhil Borkar explained to Scroll, “We have invoked some sections, but whenever there is an investigation in a case, some sections are added or deleted depending upon the findings of the investigation.

The investigation is on, and whatever will be there, we will let you know at that time.”The case was officially registered a day after the World Cup final based on a complaint filed by a student from outside Jammu and Kashmir. The complainant alleged that seven local Kashmiri students from the university’s veterinary sciences and animal husbandry department had “abused” and “threatened” him for supporting the Indian cricket team.
The complaint also mentioned alleged threats of violence, with the complainant stating, “They also threatened me to shut up, otherwise, I would be shot [sic].”According to the complainant, the accused students raised pro-Pakistan slogans after the match, causing fear among students from outside the Union Territory. The incident reportedly took place in one of the two undergraduate hostels at the university’s Shuhama campus in Ganderbal district.
Although no physical violence occurred, the complainants managed to capture a video of the purported sloganeering inside the hostel, which they subsequently submitted to the police. An anonymous university official expressed regret over the incident, stating to Scroll, “It’s an unfortunate incident.
These students are on the verge of the completion of their degrees.” The accused students, primarily fourth-year undergraduates in veterinary sciences and animal husbandry, are presently in police remand.
