Seven Punjab Police Officers Suspended Over PM’s Security Breach
In a significant move, seven police officers, including the then Ferozepur Superintendent of Police and two DSP-rank officers, have been suspended in Punjab. This action comes in the wake of the security breach incident during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state last year.
Incident Details
The security lapse occurred on January 5, when PM Modi’s convoy was unexpectedly blocked on a flyover for about 20 minutes due to a protest by farmers. This incident happened during Modi’s visit for a pre-Assembly polls rally.
Political Reactions and Probe
The incident sparked a political row, with BJP leaders criticizing the then ruling Congress government in Punjab. The Congress, however, countered, stating that the PM’s travel plans were altered last minute. A Supreme Court-appointed committee investigated the matter, pinpointing responsibility on several state officers.
AAP Government’s Action
Under the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government, the suspension of seven officers, including Gurbinder Singh (then Ferozepur police chief, now Bathinda SP), was executed. The recent order, dated November 22, further includes DSPs Parson Singh and Jagdish Kumar, Inspectors Jatinder Singh and Balwinder Singh, Sub-Inspector Jaswant Singh, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Ramesh Kumar.
Possible Penalties
These suspensions were implemented under Rule 8 of the Punjab Civil Services (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1970. The officers face potential penalties ranging from withholding of promotion to dismissal from service, highlighting the gravity of the security breach.
