Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera Allegedly Manhandled by Student Amid Campus Protests
KOLKATA, October 16, 2026 [VoM News]: Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera was allegedly manhandled by a student and verbally abused by others on Thursday, hours after his office was vandalised, the institute said.
According to an institute statement, stones were allegedly thrown at the Vice-Chancellor’s office on Wednesday night, damaging windows and furniture, while water and air-conditioning lines were also cut.
The institute said Ajmera was later surrounded by some students following a meeting convened to condemn the vandalism. Students allegedly raised slogans and used abusive language before one student manhandled him.
Ajmera, who assumed charge around 15 days ago, described the incident as unacceptable and sought strict action against those responsible while acknowledging students’ right to protest.
The incident comes amid an academic shutdown called by the SRFTI Students’ Union, which entered its 17th day on Thursday. The protest began following clashes involving students and groups reportedly linked to the RSS.
The students’ union has demanded Ajmera’s resignation, withdrawal of disciplinary notices issued to eight students and an independent inquiry into the campus violence.
In an October 14 letter to SRFTI Chairman Suresh Goel, the union said its academic shutdown and indefinite sit-in would continue until its demands were addressed.
