Sana Mir appointed ambassador for ICC Women’s T20 Qualifier
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed Sana Mir, a veteran of 226 international matches for Pakistan, including 137 as captain, as the ambassador for the Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier. This tournament will feature 10 teams competing for two spots in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. The teams are split into two groups of five, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals will secure their place in the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh later this year.
Sana expressed her excitement about her new role, emphasizing that the Qualifier not only offers a chance for teams to qualify for the T20 World Cup but also showcases the competitive nature of women’s cricket. “The Qualifier will not only provide an opportunity for two teams to qualify but also give exposure to the Associate Member teams and their players. The competition has grown more intense over the years, and the 10 nations participating in the Qualifier have many talented players,” said Sana, as quoted by ICC.
As a prominent figure in Pakistan cricket, Sana has participated in various ICC tournaments, including qualifiers. One of her standout moments was during the 2008 ICC Women’s Qualifying Series for the Women’s Cricket World Cup, where Pakistan reached the finals. For her outstanding performance, Sana was awarded the joint Player of the Series. She aims to share her knowledge and experience with the players during the Qualifier. “I plan to engage with the teams and players during the tournament, offering guidance on handling the pressure of such events and achieving success. Pakistan has a strong history in these competitions, and I have fond memories of the 2008 World Cup qualifier,” added the former Pakistan captain.
Regarding the participating teams, Sana believes that the gap between top-ranked teams and Associate Members is narrowing due to the ICC Pathway events. She sees potential for surprises in the Qualifier. “With players gaining more exposure through domestic tournaments and the ICC pathway programme, women’s cricket is growing. Regional events and the Qualifier play a crucial role in this growth. While Sri Lanka and Ireland might be favorites, teams like Scotland, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, Uganda, and Zimbabwe have the capability to cause upsets and reach the semi-finals or even the final,” concluded Sana.
