Samsung Display is preparing to revolutionize its mobile screens by integrating blue phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED) material, aiming for a transition by the second half of 2025. This move marks a significant shift from the current use of blue fluorescent materials in its OLED panels.

Enhanced Efficiency with PHOLED Technology

The adoption of blue PHOLED is expected to significantly improve the energy efficiency of Samsung’s mobile screens. The company’s current blue fluorescent materials offer an internal luminous efficiency of 25 percent, while red and green PHOLEDs achieve 100 percent. The switch to PHOLED is anticipated to reduce power consumption and enhance battery life in smartphones.

Potential Debut in Upcoming Foldable Phones

Samsung’s upcoming foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, slated for release in 2025, are expected to be the first to feature the new blue PHOLED screens. The company typically releases its foldable devices in the latter half of each year.

Challenges in Blue PHOLED Development

Despite the anticipated benefits, the development of blue PHOLED technology has faced some challenges, particularly in durability. Blue PHOLED displays reportedly have a shorter lifespan compared to fluorescent blue diodes, with only 55 percent of their longevity. Due to these ongoing development issues, the new technology might not be ready for the next generation of foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, as initially rumored.

Given that Samsung has not officially confirmed the details of PHOLED implementation in its mobile OLED panels, these reports should be considered with some caution.
