Relations Tense Over Ukraine Conflict
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has arrived in New Delhi to lead Moscow’s delegation at the G20 summit in the absence of President Vladimir Putin. Putin is not attending the summit, and there are no plans for him to deliver a video address. Tensions between Russia and many G20 members have escalated due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Challenging the Narrative
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement before Lavrov’s arrival, emphasizing their cooperation with all G20 nations to address global humanitarian and economic issues beyond the Ukraine conflict. They argued that the conflict had been provoked and sustained by the United States, to the detriment of European security.
International Concerns Over Ukrainian Ports
European Council President Charles Michel, also present at the G20, expressed his concerns over Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian ports, labeling it “scandalous” and demanding its cessation.
UK Prime Minister Comments on Putin’s Absence
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who arrived earlier at the summit, remarked on Putin’s absence, suggesting that it indicated Putin’s self-imposed “diplomatic exile.”
