Rohit Sharma Returns as Captain for T20Is Against Afghanistan, Signaling Strategic Move for T20 World Cup 2024 Plans
Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the captain of the Indian cricket team for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, scheduled to commence on January 11. The last time Rohit participated in a T20I match was in November 2022 during the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final against England. Since then, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been focusing on Test and ODI cricket, with an eye on the Cricket World Cup in 2023. During this period, Hardik Pandya assumed the role of captain in T20Is. However, Saba Karim, former India wicketkeeper-batsman, suggests that Pandya’s extended absence due to injury concerns may have influenced Rohit’s return to captaincy.
Rohit Sharma’s reinstatement as captain is seen as a strategic move by the Indian team management, indicating their plans for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024. Saba Karim emphasizes that Rohit’s presence brings stability to the team, both as a leader and a batsman.
Karim expressed his thoughts on the matter during a discussion on Sports 18, stating, “There is no doubt now. Now that you have included both of these players against Afghanistan, it means there has been a massive change in the selectors’ thinking. They feel they need experience for the World Cup. That’s why Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have made a comeback. There is another thing. Until now, the selectors had shown faith in Hardik Pandya as a captain, but questions are being raised because of Hardik Pandya’s injury. That’s why the selectors have gone back to Rohit Sharma to bring stability, both as a captain and a batter.”
The T20 squad for the Afghanistan series also includes Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma as wicketkeepers, with Ishan Kishan not considered for the shortest format. According to a BCCI source, Kishan is on a break and vacationing, and the selectors are likely exploring alternatives beyond him. The squad sees the inclusion of all-rounder Shivam Dube in the absence of Hardik Pandya.
Notably, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, integral members of the Test team, have been given a rest, while Ruturaj Gaikwad is unavailable due to fitness concerns. The squad for the T20Is against Afghanistan includes Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, and Mukesh Kumar.
