The Karnataka state government has taken a significant decision to propose renaming four airports after eminent historical figures. Industries Minister MB Patil declared in the Assembly that Belagavi Airport will be named after Kittur Rani Chennamma, Hubballi Airport after Sangolli Rayanna, Vijayapura Airport after Basaveshwara, and Shivamogga Airport after Kuvempu.

Despite longstanding public demands, previous administrations had not shown enthusiasm for renaming these airports. However, succumbing to mounting pressure, the current state government has finally recommended these names to the Centre for approval.

During discussions, various legislators suggested alternative names, such as BJP MLA Sunil Kumar proposing Koti Channayya for Mangaluru airport. Speaker UT Khader noted the public’s recommendation of naming Mangaluru airport after Rani Abakka and suggested further deliberation to finalize a suitable name.

Amidst these discussions, a proposal by MLA Prasad Abbayya to name Mysuru airport after Tippu Sultan sparked controversy. Opposition members expressed dissent, chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” opposing the suggestion.

This led to a commotion in the Assembly, emphasizing the sensitivity and differing perspectives regarding the naming of these important public spaces.
