Reducing methane emissions is a global public health issue: Methane Minute from Global Methane Hub
Methane Minute from Global Methane Hub
Sharing the latest update on efforts to reduce harmful methane emissions from the Global Methane Hub:
As September unfolds, the global climate agenda intensifies with leaders from around the world convening at New York Climate Week (September 22-29) and COP 29 (November 11-22), marking a crucial period for climate action.
These international gatherings are about setting the climate agenda for 2025 from emission reduction targets to new technologies, but also about the here and now. They are also about improving our quality of life and the future of our planet.
“Rising methane emissions are rapidly contributing to increased warming. We can pull an emergency brake by focusing on methane mitigation, especially when setting new climate commitments in this NDC cycle. It is the fastest way to reduce temperature in the short term,” said Marcelo Mena, CEO of the Global Methane Hub.
Will you be in NYC for Climate Week later this month? Let’s Connect!
Global Methane Hub will be in New York and available to connect on the latest climate developments. Let us know if you are interested and we can explore opportunities for in-person meetings.
Top Trends in Methane
Here’s what the Global Methane Hub is watching and reading:
- Carbon Brief published a Q&A highlighting a new paper co-authored by Stanford University Professor Rob Jackson and other leading experts, which finds that methane emissions reached an estimated 575m tonnes each year over 2010-19. The research finds that around two-thirds of global methane emissions come from anthropogenic sources including wetlands, inland freshwaters, agriculture, waste and fossil fuels.
- As global temperatures rise, methane released from thawing permafrost and warming tropical wetlands is accelerating climate breakdown and driving the Amazon closer to environmental catastrophe, according to a report by The Guardian.
- New York Times’ Lisa Friedman reported that John Podesta, President Biden’s top climate diplomat, is traveling to Beijing to meet with his Chinese counterpart to discuss emissions cuts.
- Chinese officials are moving to tighten emissions rules for coal mines. The new draft regulations would cut the allowable methane concentration from 30% to 8%, requiring mines to install equipment to capture higher concentrations. as reported by The Economist.
- Inside Climate News reported on several new studies that suggest global warming boosts natural methane releases, which could undermine efforts to cut emissions of the greenhouse gas from fossil fuels and agriculture.
Enteric Fermentation R&D Accelerator Launches Research Strategy to Advance Breakthroughs in Livestock Methane Mitigation
Global Methane Hub is proud to announce that the Enteric Fermentation R&D Accelerator (Accelerator) has released its Research Strategy, marking significant momentum in the fight to tackle livestock methane emissions.
Agriculture accounts for about 40% of global manmade methane emissions, with 70% of that coming from enteric fermentation—methane produced during livestock digestion.
“This research strategy is the culmination of months of work, assessing the peer reviewed literature, engaging with the international research community through scientific conferences, convening deep-dives on specific topics, and drawing on the collective expertise and years of experience – literally entire careers – of our Committee members,” said Hayden Montgomery, Program Director-Agriculture at Global Methane Hub. “We’re already advancing on some of the priority research areas identified in the strategy, including funding the development of low-cost measurement, microbiome characterization, low methane genetics, and vaccines. With the strategy now published we’ll be redoubling our efforts to advance on other critical areas and we hope that the strategy will also help guide the research investments of others wishing to contribute to this effort.”
This project is monumental not only in scale, but in its approach. The collaboration between the public, private, and philanthropic sectors fosters solutions that generate productive outcomes for all. Innovator Spotlight: Carbon Mapper will pinpoint leaks at the source to catalyze mitigation action
Check out Fast Company’s recent report on a groundbreaking methane-hunting satellite that can pinpoint methane leaks from individual facilities, directly from space.
“The satellite, called Tanager-1, will be able to spot methane leaks from individual facilities such as oil refineries and landfills. The technology is meant to help polluting industries find and plug leaks, and data will be available through a public online portal.
Carbon Mapper plans to launch additional satellites that, combined, will be able to track up to 90% of the world’s large methane plumes daily. Scientists say identifying methane sources is crucial to making the drastic emissions cuts needed to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.”
Tanager-1, and the flock of similar satellites that Carbon Mapper plans to launch, will work alongside MethaneSAT, to better understand where the highest-value actions can be taken to quell methane emissions and leaks.
